Introduction

I have played roleplaying games for 25 years, 20 with the same group of people. In that time we have played

Glorantha described

Runequest

Runequest is a marvelous roleplaying game set in the rich fictional world of Glorantha, invented by Greg Stafford. It went through 3 editions under the name Runequest.

It was completely rewritten for the 4th edition and renamed HeroQuest. The HeroQuest system is completely different, perhaps owing more to the Pendragon system, than Runequest.

I have read the HeroQuest rules and tried to run a few sessions. I love the ideas but I just can not love the game :-(.

Cthulu Mythos

Call of Cthulu

Another Chaosium game, Call of Cthulu is a detective game inspired by the horror stories of H.P. Lovecraft.

An excellent game that suffers, in my opinion from being a bit repetative in the long term. The game works best when it is driven by good roleplaying, otherwise it can be intensely frustrating.

Pendragon

Another Greg Stafford game. Pendragon sets out to take players through the entire Arthurian Legend cycle, from the birth of Arthur to his Death. I ran the full campaign over about 4 years and enjoyed it enormously.

The system is very simple and flexible and lends itself well to other genres. In 2006, it is the main rule system that we use. Enjoying campaigns set in pre-classical Greece and the 100 years war.

Star Wars (by West End)

This game is sadly out of print, with the franchise now owned by the makers of the "d20" system. It captures the flavour of the movies perfectly. If you can find this game 2nd hand, you will not be disappointed. It also works well in other similar rollicking adventure genres like Pirates etc.
