Winnie: her life in Kenya. By Marjorie Todd

 -> Home -> Writing -> Winnie

Frank and Winnie lived happily for many years as the center of their family in Padiham, Lancashire where Frank was the Health Inspector and a highly respected member of the local community. He died in 1974. Winnie lived on until 1988, during which period she derived much pleasure and pride from her growing family and grandchildren. In her later years she lived in Lytham St.Annes where Peter was privileged to take care of her.

Regarding the children, Marjorie, as a Social Worker, returned to Kenya in 1956. She married in 1958 and her two children established a third generation link with that country. Frank's prediction became a reality. She was to witness major political disturbances and the Mau Mau insurrection, which led to the granting of full political independence in 1963.

Kenneth qualified as a scientist, making a career in industrial marketing (chemicals and metals), travelling extensively in Europe and North America.

Peter mastered in Civil Engineering, his career being in local Government and he is one of the Senior Engineers with Lancashire County Council. Included in his area of responsibility is Barnoldswick which, in 1974, was ‘moved' from Yorkshire into the administrative County of Lancashire to the intense chagrin of the residents.
